A quick drive on almost any road here in Guilford County reveals the County’s new policy on mowing and roadside trimming. Ok, so the mowing isn’t an issue as long as those doing the mowing keep the mowers horizontal to the surface of the ground; however, the butchering and carnage begins when these powered mowers are used vertically to mangle any growing tree or plant within reach. Trees with branches sheared off nearly twelve feet above the ground appear as helpless amputees stabbing the air with their battered stumps. Why this carnage? I don’t know; however, if we rule out sheer incompetence or indifference, economics is the next best guess: fuel costs and manpower are always key factors these days. Of course, I’ll bet this isn’t a problem on the roads in the proximity of Irving Park!
