During the run up to the Iraq war and the years that followed I listened attentively to Bush’s remarks regarding that fateful decision, which has jeopardized the well being of this country. When I quizzed a dear friend of mine who, unfortunately is no longer with us, if he had listened to Bush’s last press conference, Jim replied, “I can’t listen to that man. He makes my head hurt”. After watching the press conference on the president’s “Surge” update, I second Jim’s assessment and add the discomfort of viewing the myriad facial contortions, which accompany the president’s fractured explanations, to the sense of dread, pain, hopelessness, confusion, and incompetence that my friend expressed whenever W attempted to share his own personal distortion of reality. This administration will serve as a reminder that democracy depends on a vigilant and active citizenry; it may also mark our nadir as advocates of the system we profess to champion and the decline, if not eradication, of the principal values so precious in the government of a free people.  Although political analysis may debate the reasons for the demise of the Bush Monarchy, I cannot believe the public is ready for another coronation –in this nation we inaugurate a fellow citizen who has convinced us that he/she has the credentials to serve. Nothing more, nothing less, and certainly no more aberrations in the electoral process at the hands of a few power brokers and the Supreme Court!
