Since writing about the travails of Senior Net in Greensboro a month ago on this blog I got an update on the organization’s status from Jean Eason.  Friends Homes has offered Senior Net classroom space in recently remodeled Hinshaw Hall free of charge.  While this generous gift will allow Senior Net to resume its regular teaching schedule around the month of January, there are still several obstacles which must be overcome.  When BellSouth, now AT & T, reclaimed the classroom space donated to Senior Net it also withdrew its contribution of providing free internet access and a web site to the organization as well; consequently, Senior Net is in desperate need of a local internet service provider to fill the void left by the telco merger of BellSouth and AT & T.  Road Runner owned by Time Warner provides free internet access to accredited educational organizations; however, the non-profit status of Senior Net doesn’t seem to qualify even though the Senior Net has a growing number of seniors enrolled in its various classes for computers and software, in fact, the current waiting list for classes has approximately 300 people on it.  And the  demand for expanded curricula and classes increases daily.  Teachers, coaches, and technical support positions are comprised of an all volunteer staff in order to maintain a cost effective benefit for those utilizing this service as well as to extend the personal satisfaction of participating in a caring community of peers.  Any one willing to be an ombudsman for Senior Net with local ISP’s, or volunteer in any capacity, or offer suggestions please leave a comment.
